PROJECT 01
READING THE CONTEXTS OF TRADITIONAL STREETS
For this project, we are required to study and research on the place context of our selected traditional street in Malaysia. All the data collected id then separated into 2 categories: Physical (tangible) and Non-Physical (non-tangible) elements in the form of a sketch journal. A 10 page sketch journal is required to summarize the captured elements of the street and to showcase our understanding of the place context.

SELF REFLECTION
The reason i chose Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock as my research case study is because of my fascination towards its rich historical background, traditions and culture of the Peranakans. Though many Peranakan families have left the street due to lack of working opportunities, there are many shophouses, selling traditional Peranakan cuisines, clothing and crafts that remained. It was quite unfortunate that we weren't able to visit the street due to the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic at the moment. Instead, we conducted a virtual site visit via Google Maps, which was very undermining compared to physical visits. Though there were sufficient information that I was able to obtain from the web to complete this project, however, I long for the first hand experience of being physically there, being able to see the newly acquired changed made in the street, interacting with locals as well as being able to take pictures of the exquisite details of the building facades (unattainable from the web).
After the completion of this project, I have come to understand how architecture relates to its surrounding context, history, culture, tradition and as a part of the place identity. The intangible aspects are as important as the tangible ones, while physical things are the ones that forms the street; its history, tradition and culture forms its place identity.
